The towns of Macomb, Quincy, Galesburg and Jacksonville offer a number of attractions
that prove Western Illinois to be an area steeped in history. When in Macomb,
visitors can tour the McDonough County Courthouse and the Museum of Geology
or take a quick trip to the country to discover the area's historic barns. Quincy,
located on the banks of the Mississippi River, features examples of 19th-century
architecture as well as Indian Mounds Park, the site of preserved American Indian
burial mounds. A trip to Galesburg in late June introduces visitors to the city's
railway past with the Galesburg Railroad Days celebration, while culture seekers
can visit the Galesburg Civic Art Center and the Orpheum Theatre, a landmark
since 1916. South of Galesburg, Jacksonville offers family-friendly festivals
throughout the year, from the Chautauqua and General Grierson Days Civil War
reenactments in June to the Cruise Night and Street Rod Reunion in September
to the Christmas Homes Tour and Tea in December.
